Dolphins team owner Stephen Ross is reportedly giving head coach Mike McDaniel some leeway, with no immediate plans to dismiss him, it seems.
Miami Dolphins and Head Coach Mike McDaniel: A Season of Mixed Results
The Miami Dolphins, under the leadership of head coach Mike McDaniel, have had a rollercoaster ride in the past few seasons.
In the 2022 season, the Dolphins ended a five-year playoff drought with a 9-8 record, thanks in part to their high-scoring offense that ranked No. 2 in the NFL with 29.2 points per game. They also led the league in total offense with 401.3 yards per game. This impressive performance earned them a wild-card spot, but they were unfortunately eliminated in the first round by the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.
However, the 2024 season saw a step backwards for the Dolphins, with an 8-9 record. This was partly due to the absence of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who missed a total of six games, resulting in the team winning only two of them.
As the 2025 season unfolds, the Dolphins find themselves in a tough spot, starting with a 0-3 record. The offense, which once showed great promise, hasn't found any kind of rhythm, and the defense has struggled to stop both the run and pass. Despite the early disappointments, owner Stephen Ross remains steadfast in his support of McDaniel, believing in his potential to turn things around.
Fans, however, have shown mixed reactions. While some continue to support McDaniel, others have criticised the team's performance and questioned some of his decisions. However, McDaniel is respected within the league for his football intellect and personality.
The Dolphins will look to get back on track this Thursday night against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. If they can manage to win, it could be a much-needed boost for the team and their embattled head coach.
Despite the early struggles, McDaniel has not yet faced the threat of being fired. Ian Rapoport reports that no such action is imminent. However, Ross has made it clear that if fans stop showing up to games and McDaniel loses the locker room, his thinking could change.
McDaniel served as an offensive assistant with the San Francisco 49ers for five seasons before becoming the head coach of the Dolphins in 2022. He held positions as the 49ers' run game coordinator and offensive coordinator. Stephen Ross believes in McDaniel so much that he has invested in him with a contract extension that lasts through 2028.
The Dolphins have a poor record against teams entering the matchup with a winning record, going 1-13 in their last 14 such games. This is a statistic McDaniel will be keen to improve as the season progresses.
Despite the challenges faced so far, McDaniel remains optimistic and determined to lead the Dolphins to success. As the season unfolds, fans will be watching closely to see how he navigates these difficult times and whether he can turn the team's fortunes around.
