Dolphins facing season-long absence of running back Alexander Mattison
Jamaal Williams' NFL Career Takes a Turn, While Alexander Mattison Sustains Season-Ending Injury
In the world of the National Football League (NFL), the careers of two running backs, Jamaal Williams and Alexander Mattison, have taken different paths. While Williams has been a free agent since March, his career has been marked by a peak in 2022 with the Detroit Lions, Mattison's season has been cut short due to an injury.
Jamaal Williams' Career Highlights
Jamaal Williams, an NFL veteran with eight seasons under his belt, has accumulated a total of 4,122 rushing yards and 32 rushing touchdowns over 117 games and 45 starts. His most productive season was in 2022 with the Detroit Lions, where he rushed for an impressive 1,066 yards and led the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns in just nine starts.
However, Williams' recent stint with the New Orleans Saints saw a decline in usage and production, with 48 rushes for 164 yards and one touchdown over 14 games, plus 57 receiving yards. He also contributed as a kick returner with a career-high 288 yards that season.
Alexander Mattison's Injury
Meanwhile, Alexander Mattison, currently a free agent, has been sidelined due to a neck injury sustained during a 21-yard pass play in Sunday's preseason game against the Bears in Chicago. Mattison was taken to a local hospital for surgery and is expected to make a full recovery, according to a report.
Last season, Mattison played in 14 games (seven starts) for the Las Vegas Raiders, rushing for 420 yards and four TDs. He also had 36 catches for 294 yards and one score. In his career, Mattison has 136 receptions for 1,012 yards and seven scores.
The Miami Dolphins' Backfield
The Miami Dolphins' current backfield includes starter De'Von Achane, 2024 fourth-round pick Jaylen Wright, and rookie sixth-rounder Ollie Gordon II. However, the team reportedly worked out veteran running back Jamaal Williams on Monday, potentially offering him a chance to rejuvenate his career.
Williams signed a three-year, $12 million deal with the Saints after his career season with the Detroit Lions in 2022, but was released by New Orleans in March. Despite his strong performance with the Lions, Williams has faced multiple team rejections during the offseason, including from the Miami Dolphins.
As Williams navigates his way through free agency, the future of his NFL career remains uncertain. With age (entering 30) and two recent less productive seasons seemingly hindering his appeal to NFL teams, Williams continues to work out for teams such as the Chicago Bears.
