Dog Owner Faces Hefty Fine for Neglecting Pet in Cramped Bathroom
After a young man from Düsseldorf was found guilty of keeping his dog in a cramped bathroom for several days, he was hit with a substantial fine of €3,700. Initially planning to contest the penalty order, he eventually dropped his appeal to avoid a court hearing.
Neighbors reported hearing the dog's constant barking and alerted authorities, who discovered the Spitz in a filthy, six-square-meter bathroom filled with piles of waste and a stale water pan. Emergency services gained entry through a tilted window, and they then handed the neglected dog over to animal welfare services.
The incident has sparked discussions about strengthening animal welfare regulations in North Rhine-Westphalia, with animal rights groups advocating for larger living spaces for pets. As a result, a local woman, also from Düsseldorf, was fined €2,000 for neglecting her cat by confining it in a tiny cage without food or water.
