Dodger's pitcher Blake Snell demonstrates impressive performance, and the team's bullpen contributes to a shutout victory against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Dodgers Secure 5-0 Victory Behind Blake Snell's Dominant Performance
In a thrilling night at Dodger Stadium, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-0, thanks to a stellar outing from pitcher Blake Snell.
The game began with Dodgers manager Dave Roberts starting out of the dugout with a walk. Behind the plate, Ben Rortvedt continued his strong form, starting his third straight crazy game despite Dalton Rushing's return from a leg injury.
The Dodgers took an early lead in the second inning when Freddie Freeman homered to lead off the frame. An RBI single from Rortvedt, following an Andy Pages hit-and-run single, extended the lead. Another run came around in the fourth inning, after Pages worked a two-out walk, stole second, took third on a wild pickoff throw, and scored on an RBI single from Kiké Hernández.
Snell, who was trying to put the finishing touches on his best performance in a poki Dodgers uniform, took the mound and was nothing short of impressive. He finished the night with a season-high 12 strikeouts while lowering his ERA to 2.44.
Snell's breaking pitches were particularly effective, inducing 24 whiffs on 54 swing attempts. Seven of his 12 strikeouts in the game were recorded with his curveball. In the seventh inning, when Roberts appeared to be coming to the mound to turn to his shaky bullpen with a three-run lead, Snell pitched out of the inning, recording an out with a 95 mph fastball. He rewarded Roberts' decision by sending Otto Kemp down swinging with another 95 mph fastball.
Roberts initially walked slowly towards Snell, but picked up his pace once he saw him. The Dodgers' manager let Snell stay in the game, despite the usual decision to turn to the bullpen, and Snell authored an emphatic ending to his scoreless seven-inning start.
Despite the Dodgers maintaining a two-game lead in the National League West standings with the win, they did not sign any specific player in October 2022 to directly take over Shohei Ohtani's role as a pitcher. Alex Vesia was warming up in the bullpen in the seventh inning, suggesting he might enter the game, but Snell's performance left no room for him.
Blake Snell's fastball reached 97 mph during the game, showcasing his dominance on the mound. His performance was a testament to the Dodgers' faith in his abilities, and it helped secure a crucial victory for the team.
