Dodger's Manager Yamamoto Set to Secure Narrow Victory Lead
Dodgers Lock Horns with Diamondbacks, 9:40 ET
Baseball season might not be a standout right now, but there's always something captivating as the Dodgers are facing off against the Diamondbacks. With the NHL playoffs sizzling and the NBA playoffs in full swing, it's easy to get carried away. But, some days, we stumble upon a matchup that piques our interest, and buckle up, because this is it!
If there's a weakness that the Dodgers can't quite conquer, it's their freakin' medical staff. Yeah, maybe that's a bit harsh, but injury woes seem to follow them like a shadow. Their contemporaries face setbacks too, but they've struggled to keep their pitching staff healthy. Originally, I thought their biggest disappointment was their lackluster road performances — the Dodgers have lost 75% of their games away from Dodger Stadium this season. With Yoshinobu Yamamoto in their corner, they're hoping to improve their road woes. Yamamoto has been nothing short of astonishing this season, boasting a 0.90 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP. He's also struck out 49 batters in 40 innings. Diamondbacks' hitters haven't faced Yamamoto much, but in the at-bats they have, he's been tough, holding them to just three hits and five strikeouts.
The Diamondbacks have their own set of issues to address. Truth be told, aside from the darn Mets and perhaps the Yankees, every team grapples with pitfalls. The Diamondbacks have honed their team internally and have managed to cultivate talent. Their World Series appearance two years ago is a testament to their prowess. Nevertheless, the current season hasn't been grand for them, with a 19-18 record and a 9-10 home standing. Their hitting and pitching stats suggest room for improvement, but they've more or less been steady for the most part. Taking the mound for the Diamondbacks today is Brandon Pfaadt. Pfaadt, who doesn't exactly have a catchy name or a straightforward spelling, has been decent this season with a 3.79 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. He's posted a quality start in all four of his home starts this season. The bad news is that Dodgers' hitters have done exceedingly well against Pfaadt, with an astounding .329 batting average and almost half of their hits going for extra bases.
A couple of player props catch my eye in this game: Freddie Freeman ought to surpass 1.5 total bases. Although Freeman has only four hits against Pfaadt, three of his hits have gone for extra bases. Shohei Ohtani hasn't slammed a homer off of Pfaadt yet, and since Ohtani tends to hit homers against everyone, he might be due for one soon. The play that truly stands out to me is that the Dodgers will be victorious after the initial five innings. Pfaadt has been good, but he hasn't been invincible at home. Yamamoto, on the other hand, has been on fire. Back the first five run line.
