Documentary juggernaut formed by the Kansas City Chiefs, Hulk Hogan, and Christopher Reeve through the use of words and images.
Words + Pictures: Pioneering Premium Non-Scripted Storytelling
Words + Pictures (W+P), the non-scripted studio founded by Connor Schell and Peter Chernin, continues to make waves in the world of documentary filmmaking. The studio, recognised for its exceptional premium storytelling, is currently working on several high-profile projects.
One of the most anticipated projects is a documentary about the life of the late actor Chadwick Boseman, narrated by Malcolm Jamal Warner. W+P has also been working on a documentary about Hulk Hogan, which was in the final stages of production before the tragic news of Hogan's death on July 24. The team had clocked over 20 hours of interviews with the wrestling legend.
W+P's success story began with "Super/Man," the first project they financed independently. The film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, was later sold to Warner Bros. Discovery for $15 million. The studio has since produced approximately 30 projects, including "Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story" and the critically acclaimed "The Kingdom" docuseries.
"The Kingdom," helmed by Kristen Lappas, stands out for its unique focus on the pursuit of greatness rather than the final score. The series, currently streaming on HBO Max, follows the Kansas City Chiefs as they strive for a third consecutive Super Bowl title. The team at W+P recently received a call from the Chiefs, expressing interest in chronicling their journey.
Connor Schell, the founder and CEO of W+P, spent 16 years at ESPN before venturing into the world of documentary filmmaking. He was inspired by Ezra Edelman's nearly eight-hour, five-part film project, which expanded the documentary format and set new standards for storytelling. Schell aspired to create more projects that could reach similar heights.
Libby Geist, president of W+P, confirmed that the studio is also working on projects about legendary NCAA football coach Nick Saban, the New York Yankees, and NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony. The team's focus is expanding beyond sports stories to include projects about music, politics, and popular culture.
When the team received news of Hogan's death during a Zoom call, everyone took the news seriously. Geist stated, "We're not just making a documentary; we're telling a story about someone's life. It's a responsibility we don't take lightly."
In their collaborative work with the family of the late actor Chadwick Boseman, W+P aims to honour his legacy and share his extraordinary story with the world. The project is a testament to W+P's commitment to premium non-scripted storytelling and their ability to bring compelling narratives to life.
