Ukraine Holds Off Russian Offensives in Pokrovsk and Dobropillya

In a recent report published on August 11 by the Analytical Center DeepState, it was revealed that Russian forces have intensified their advance towards Dobropillya, a town in the Donbass region of Ukraine. However, it is important to note that the report does not suggest that the Russians have breached the frontline in Dobropillya or gained control of the town.

The Russian forces are attempting to establish a foothold near the Dobropillya-Kramatorsk highway, but their progress has been met with resistance from Ukrainian forces. The movements of small Russian groups, estimated to be around 5-10 people, are being monitored and countered by the Ukrainian forces.

Similarly, the strategically significant city of Pokrovsk, located in the Donetsk Oblast, remains under Ukrainian control despite persistent Russian offensives. The nearby area of Dobropillia is also contested within the Donbas region, although the current control status is less clear in the available recent sources.

The Russian forces are using a tactic of infiltration, putting pressure on Ukrainian positions and trying to bypass the first line. These small groups infiltrate and try to hide somewhere in one basement before engaging in fire contact with Ukrainian EW operators, drone operators, or attempting to accumulate somewhere.

Despite these incursions, the Ukrainian forces have held their ground, reflecting their resilience in the face of Russian aggression. The diminishing success of these infiltration and offensive operations underlines Russia’s decreasing battlefield initiative.

The broader territorial dispute context involves Russia demanding recognition of its annexations in Ukraine, including areas it does not physically control. This strategy aims at achieving political control over all Ukraine rather than selective territorial seizure. Russian officials, such as Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, publicly deny ambitions to seize Ukrainian territory outright, framing their objectives as protecting Russian-speaking populations and rejecting Ukraine's sovereignty in certain domestic matters. However, these claims contrast with Moscow's repeated demands for recognition of annexed territories.

In a statement, the Strategic Communications Center refuted allegations that Russians have breached the frontline in one of the sectors on the east of Ukraine. Reserves were sent to dislodge and destroy the infiltrating Russian groups.

The situation on the Pokrovsk and Dobropillia directions is confusing to those who do not understand how maps are composed based on open sources. The breach does not mean that the Russians have taken control of the territory shown on analytical maps.

In summary, Pokrovsk is still held by Ukraine despite heavy Russian assaults aimed at control since 2024. Russia demands political recognition of its annexed Ukrainian territory, including areas it does not control. Russian infiltration tactics are part of continued military pressure but have not secured lasting territorial gains in key areas. The fighting in these areas illustrates the broader strategic stalemate and ongoing contest over Donbas territory.
