Dmitry Guberniev vows Bentley for Bolshunov in FLGR leadership bid

Dmitry Guberniev has outlined ambitious plans for the Russian Ski Federation (FLGR) if he takes charge. The well-known sports commentator aims to strengthen ties with athletes, improve financial incentives and boost media coverage of cross-country skiing. His proposals come as tensions persist between star skier Alexander Bolshunov and the federation's current leadership.

Guberniev has promised to rebuild relations with athletes, ensuring better support and significant cash rewards for victories. One of his first steps would be gifting Alexander Bolshunov a Bentley, signalling a fresh approach to athlete recognition. He also assured that Bolshunov, a vocal critic of the FLGR, would no longer be overlooked by the federation.

Bolshunov's relationship with the FLGR has been strained for years. Between 2024 and 2026, disputes over payments and lack of support marred his collaboration with the organisation. Despite these issues, he won gold in the 50 km mass start at the 2025 World Championships in Norway. However, Russia's exclusion from major competitions, including the Olympics, limited his international appearances.

Guberniev's plans extend beyond athlete relations. He intends to launch media projects to promote cross-country skiing, raising the sport's profile. His upcoming role as host of the live biathlon broadcast in Zlatoust further highlights his commitment to winter sports coverage.

If appointed, Guberniev's leadership could reshape the FLGR's approach to athlete support and public engagement. His proposals include direct financial rewards, high-profile gifts and expanded media initiatives. These changes may address long-standing grievances while increasing visibility for Russian cross-country skiing.
