In the heart of August 2025, the United States and Russia find themselves in a tense and complex relationship, with the Ukraine conflict serving as a significant point of contention.

The US views Russia as an enduring great power adversary, whose aggressive actions in Ukraine pose a threat to broader US and allied security. The US policy emphasises a strong confrontation against Russia, aiming to secure a stable outcome rather than accommodation, to avoid further Russian aggression and potential broader conflict.

Former President Trump, in his recent stance, has been critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia's war conduct. Trump has advocated for diplomatic meetings but also new sanctions, reflecting his growing impatience with Russia as the main obstacle to peace. The current US White House under President Biden supports strong pressure on Russia with sanctions while exploring diplomatic avenues.

However, no breakthrough peace deal has occurred, with Russia demanding concessions such as Ukraine never joining NATO, while conflict continues. In the Kherson region, Russian forces have temporarily reduced attacks to regroup and prepare for more active attacks on islands in the Dnieper River.

Meanwhile, the Ryazan refinery in Russia is currently operating at 48% of its normal capacity due to a drone attack, damaging two areas that can process a total of around 20,000 tons. Ukraine reportedly attacked the rail hub of Tatsinskaya in Russia's Rostov region with drones, causing at least ten explosions. Two people were killed in a Russian drone attack near Vovchansk in the eastern Kharkiv region.

On the diplomatic front, U.S. special envoy Keith Kellogg is expected to visit Ukraine later in the week, where he is set to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The goal is to send a message that NATO is a strong defense alliance and not something to be taken lightly.

India has rejected US and EU criticism of its Russian oil imports, stating it will protect its national interests and economic security. Following the US withdrawal, Russia has officially ceased adhering to the treaty on the renunciation of land-based atomic short- and intermediate-range missiles.

In Europe, the situation is such that land-based atomic short- and intermediate-range missiles from US production are being stationed in Europe. The commander of the 45th Panzer Brigade of the German Armed Forces in Lithuania aims to make the troops stationed there a deployable brigade within two years.

The Netherlands announced a new weapons package worth around 500 million euros for Ukraine, including additional US weapons and ammunition for the Patriot air defense systems. As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the international community remains vigilant, with diplomatic efforts and military support playing crucial roles in maintaining peace and stability.
