Gear up for the 2024 swimming season as a lifeguard with DLRG! 🌊🏊‍♂️

The coronavirus pandemic and limited swimming pool hours have affected lifeguard training, resulting in the inability to train an entire cohort, according to the German Life Saving Association in Bad Nenndorf. With this gap, DLRG President Ute Vogt is on the hunt for new lifeguards for the upcoming season.

An online survey by the DLRG revealed that 83% of respondents felt safer in the water with lifeguards present, emphasizing their crucial role in public safety. It's no wonder that 74% of respondents expressed a desire for more lifeguards at swimming spots.

As water rescue and civil protection tasks have intensified, the demand for lifeguards continues to grow. Swimming pools and schools also report increased training requests. With a consistent staffing shortage, the need for new lifeguards in the outdoor pool season is instrumental in ensuring smooth operations.

To support their integrated role in various water rescue and swim safety activities, lifeguards monitor over 1,300 open waters across Germany every year. In addition, they support staff at almost as many swimming pools, providing lifeguard services to ensure a safe swimming experience for all.

Germany's Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft (DLRG) is actively seeking new lifeguards to meet these demands. Being a lifeguard offers an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in water-related activities while ensuring the safety of others.

Key requirements to become a DLRG lifeguard include:

  1. Meeting the basic physical fitness and general health thresholds
  2. Being at least 17 years old and showcasing strong swimming and water safety skills
  3. Earning specific certifications, such as the "Rettungsschwimmer Silber" (DRSA Silber) with practical and theoretical competencies

To apply, follow these steps:

  1. Contact the DLRG directly to learn about the application process and any additional requirements.
  2. Look for DLRG-approved training centers that offer certification courses.
  3. Utilize the DLRG website for in-depth information on the application and document requirements.

Remember, some lifeguards may need additional training or assessments, especially for high-risk environments like beaches or open water. Participating in DLRG volunteer activities is a great way to gain experience and stand out for potential 2024 season employment.

As the pandemic's impact persists and demands on lifeguards grow, prompt and thorough application preparation is vital. By adhering to these guidelines and getting started early, you can successfully become a lifeguard with the DLRG for the 2024 swimming season.
