Toronto FC has made a significant move in the Major League Soccer (MLS) transfer market, announcing the acquisition of Djordje Mihailovic from the Colorado Rapids. The deal, worth a record $8 million guaranteed, with up to $1 million more in conditional incentives, was finalized on August 7, 2025.
Mihailovic, a versatile midfielder, has signed a three-and-a-half-year Designated Player contract with Toronto FC, extending until the end of 2028, with a club option for 2029. However, the transfer is subject to Mihailovic passing medical tests, obtaining his International Transfer Certificate (ITC), and securing the necessary work permit.
The deal was announced officially, but the transfer will become fully official once these procedural steps are completed, expected shortly after the announcement date.
Mihailovic, who previously played for Montreal Impact in 2021 and 2022, has had a productive season with the Colorado Rapids, scoring 9 goals and providing 7 assists in 24 matches. His arrival is hoped to boost Toronto FC's offense, which currently ranks 26th in the league.
Canadian international Theo Corbeanu leads Toronto FC's goalscoring chart with five goals, while Honduran Deybi Flores leads in assists with two. With Mihailovic's addition, the team aims to improve their offensive performance, having scored 25 goals in 24 matches so far.
Toronto FC has been without a designated player since buying out the contracts of Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi in early July. Mihailovic's salary is significantly lower than those of his predecessors, offering the team a cost-effective solution to strengthen their squad.
