DJ Hype Secures XOYO Residency for Upcoming Performances
In the vibrant world of drum and bass music, few names resonate as profoundly as that of DJ Hype. Known in real life as Kevin Ford, this UK-based DJ and producer has been a driving force in the genre since the early 1990s.
DJ Hype's longstanding residencies in London have been a cornerstone of the city's drum and bass scene. His tenure at famed clubs like Metalheadz nights at the Blue Note (Camden), The End, and Fabric, has left an indelible mark on the genre's history.
One of the most significant labels associated with DJ Hype is Playaz, a drum and bass powerhouse he runs alongside DJ Zinc. Known for heavy, dancefloor-focused releases, Playaz has been a major player in the scene. Playaz-held events and DJ Hype's residencies often took place at iconic London venues like Fabric and the previously popular The End nightclub.
These residencies have been instrumental in supporting the drum and bass scene through the 1990s, 2000s, and beyond. They often featured DJ Hype alongside other Playaz artists, drawing fans from all over the world.
While detailed records of DJ Hype's London residency history and timeline of major residencies and clubs associated with the Playaz record label are scarce, it is known that Playaz held over a decade of show-stopping club nights at Fabric, on the last Friday of every month. Playaz nights also ran at The End for 5 years. In the rave/jungle era of his career, DJ Hype had a residency at The Rocket on Holloway Road.
In recent news, DJ Hype will have a month-long residency at XOYO in London throughout January. Special guests for this residency include Brockie, Jamie Rodigan, Shut Up & Dance, Randall, T>I, Xtrah, Taxman, Tyke, MC GQ, IC3, and Eksman. The announcement of this residency was first posted on LoveThatBass, a record label that covers the full spectrum of the jungle/dnb genre.
Interestingly, XOYO, where DJ Hype's residency will take place, is located near his Playaz Dungeon studio. Tickets for this residency can be purchased from Skiddle. The final week of DJ Hype's residency will feature an extra special, all-night, 5-hour set from DJ Hype.
DJ Hype's radio career is equally impressive. He had shows on pirate station Fantasy FM and a long-running weekly D&B show on Kiss FM, where he mixed & scratched the most upfront jungle/drum & bass cuts on the airwaves.
DJ Hype's contribution to the drum and bass scene in London cannot be overstated. His enduring residencies, influential label, and pioneering spirit continue to shape the genre today.
