Dixieland band Ceresband's tunes erupt in the city of Sanremo
The Dutch Dixieland band Ceresband has recently made a splash in Sanremo, Italy, a city renowned for its music festivals and rich musical heritage. Originating from the Netherlands, Ceresband specializes in traditional Dixieland jazz, known for its upbeat rhythms, collective improvisation, and vibrant sound that captures the spirit of early jazz.
The band, consisting of eight members—Ben Vinke, David van der Ven, Tieme Zegelink, Lucas Habekotté, Mathijs Detering, Joris Krol, Joseph Jones, and Coen van der Wilt—has been traveling around the French Riviera and found a warm welcome in Sanremo. Tieme Zegelink, the band's manager, is from Wageningen, Netherlands, and he mentioned that the atmosphere in Sanremo is fantastic, with the people appreciating music more than the French audience.
Performing in Sanremo was a significant milestone for Ceresband, as it marked a new location for the band. They delighted the audience with a mix of jazz and Italian tradition, playing songs such as "Bella Ciao" and "Buonasera Signorina". Their performance on Via Matteotti transformed the street into a mini New Orleans, with the audience stopping to listen, leaving coins, and smiling at the band. The evening was filled with music and laughter for the Ceresband in Sanremo.
Mathijs Detering, a member of the band and a trumpet player, also studies agriculture. Last year, Tieme Zegelink was the band's driver, but this year he is the manager. The band practices every Thursday and often performs weekends in various locations in the Netherlands.
Tieme Zegelink shared that the experience of performing in Sanremo was an honor and a valuable one, highlighting Ceresband's international appeal and their ability to engage audiences beyond their home country. They left Sanremo with the wind carrying their light music away, but not before leaving behind a trail of music that will certainly be remembered.
Mathijs Detering expressed that the band will return to Sanremo, looking forward to another opportunity to share their energetic style and contribute to cultural exchange through music. For now, Ceresband is currently based in Cannes, France, continuing to spread their unique brand of Dixieland jazz across Europe.
The average time spent by Ceresband members on social media, discussing their recent success in Sanremo, entertaining followers with updates about their performances and music, might be substantial. Their entertaining fusion of traditional Dixieland jazz and Italian classics like "Bella Ciao" and "Buonasera Signorina" on Sanremo's Via Matteotti, evidently, has been shared extensively on music platforms, creating a wider reach for their vibrant sound.
