Diving in the Rhine could potentially be lethal

The Rhine River in Düsseldorf is off-limits for swimming, with fines of up to 1,000 euros for bathing due to numerous hazards and the city's strict safety regulations[1]. The Rhine's waters are unpredictable, posing risks from strong currents and river traffic, water pollution, cold temperatures, and hidden underwater obstacles[2].

The dangers of swimming in the Rhine are well-documented. In 2020 alone, three people have tragically lost their lives during rescue operations, and nine others required medical treatment, with six needing hospitalisation[3]. Last weekend, a heartbreaking incident occurred in Trebur, Hesse, where a five-year-old boy and his 30-year-old mother drowned in the Rhine[4].

The presence of 'kribben' - gravel areas protruding into the water - can exacerbate these risks, as treacherous whirlpools and currents often form at these spots[1]. Christian Ruda, head diving instructor of the Düsseldorf fire department, has warned that ships can be hundreds of meters further away when the suction or the subsequent waves reach the shore[5].

The ban on swimming extends to specific zones around Rhine harbours, bridges, ship and ferry landing stages, locks, pre-harbors, handling facilities, and shipyards[6]. The Rhine's fairway current can be particularly strong and dangerous, especially for children, who may be drawn into the water when a ship passes by[7].

Despite the risks, the Rhine has become increasingly popular for cooling off during the summer due to travel restrictions caused by the Corona pandemic[8]. However, the appearance of a lower water level can be deceptive, tempting children to wade into the river.

The Düsseldorf fire department has been busy this year, conducting 30 rescue operations on the Rhine, with seven incidents occurring since the summer holidays[9]. In 2019, the department intervened a total of 65 times on the Rhine[10].

If you're looking for a refreshing dip, it's best to stick to official swimming pools or controlled water parks instead of the Rhine itself[3]. By adhering to these safety measures, we can all enjoy the summer season while ensuring our own and others' wellbeing.

Swimming in the Rhine is not only prohibited, but it also carries significant risks, as evidenced by the tragic incidents and the high number of rescue operations that have occurred. Instead of attempting to swim in the Rhine, it's advisable to stick to official swimming pools or controlled water parks for a safer and more enjoyable summer experience.
