Diverting Juvenile Offenders from Roadways
In the upcoming city council election on April 27, incumbent Mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, has set his sights on maintaining the success of the last election and addressing pressing issues such as youth crime.
Ludwig, who leads the Social Democrats (SPÖ), has been vocal about his plans to mobilize voters and discuss his strategies in an interview with oe24.TV. However, specific details about his approach to youth crime, particularly among under-14s, remain elusive.
The current mayor of Vienna has distanced himself from the strategy of his predecessor to engage in a "duel" with the FPÖ. Instead, Ludwig aims to emphasize the importance of stability and strengthen the SPÖ to handle future challenges.
Ludwig believes that the distance between the SPÖ and other parties is too great for many people, creating a sense of hopelessness about change. He plans to bridge this gap and foster a sense of unity within Vienna's diverse community.
According to Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and the federal government, criminals are getting younger, with unusually many Syrians among very young offenders. Ludwig has expressed concern about this trend and believes that current legal possibilities are not enough to show young people limits. He has hinted at the need for more comprehensive measures to address youth crime.
The Vienna budget, which may face a shortfall of around 4 billion euros, has been a point of contention. Ludwig attributes 87% of the budget deficit to the federal government, while the remaining 13% is attributed to the states, communities, and social insurance institutions. To address this issue, Vienna aims to save 500 million euros last year and another 500 million euros this year.
The FPÖ has claimed that the Vienna budget disaster is much bigger than in the federal government, but Ludwig remains focused on finding solutions to the challenges facing Vienna. The SPÖ, currently polling at the top for the election, is determined to continue its work in creating a safe, stable, and inclusive city for all its residents.
