District Leader Position in Ostallgäu CSU Shifts: Lars Leveringhaus Steps Down, Andreas Kaufmann Takes Over

District Shake-up in Ostallgau CSU:

New boss Andreas Kaufmann steers the Christian Socialists into the municipal election campaign, succeeding Lars Leveringhaus.

County - Sympathy, unity, consensus: These values, echoed by the 91 eligible delegates at the Vogler gasthaus par excellence, are the cornerstone of the party's success, according toLeaveringhaus, the outgoing CSU chief. Assuming the chief post of Angelika Schorer two years ago, the party faced "huge challenges." They aimed to ace the European Parliament, state parliament, and federal elections with impressive results, and they did just that.

At the European election, they secured 43% of the votes in Ostallgau—a significant leap over the other parties. During the state election, Andreas Kaufmann, the new Ostallgau candidate, achieved the best result of all direct Allgäu candidates. The cherry on top was Stephen Stracke's success at the federal election in February. With 45.5% of the first votes, Stracke clinched the best result in the entire Swabia district.

Leaveringhaus explained his departure from the chief post as a "logical step" in the development of a strong Ostallgau CSU. He extended a playful challenge to Kaufmann, insinuating that he would take on the new role: "Your focus on one-sided state parliament work ends today; you should become the new district chairman."

Kaufmann steps up: "All systems go"

Kaufmann made his move swiftly: "If you trust me, I'm ready to lead." He expressed his deep respect for Leaveringhaus' achievements as chairman, promising to kickstart the municipal election campaign with full force. No matter the office, Kaufmann pledged his party's support—fromLamerdingen to Nesselwang.

Kaufmann earned 87 out of 89 valid votes, a strong start for his new position. In comparison, Leaveringhaus could rally 91.4% of the delegates' votes two years ago. Kaufmann has been with the CSU since 2007, served on the district council since 2014, and occupied a seat on the Roßhauptener town council for the past four years. However, he will have to relinquish this position due to the demands of his state parliament duties.

The five deputy merchants also scored excellent results in the elections, with Jakob Stocker-Böck, the district chairman of the Young Union, getting the top score of 90 out of 91 votes. Fuessen mayor Maximilian Eichstetter faced some criticism, managing to garner only five opposing votes. Convincing results were also achieved by Stephan Stracke (88 out of 91 votes), Dieter Luitz (84 out of 90), and Julia von Stillfried (87 out of 91).

Stillfried is an intriguing case: Despite being from Kaufbeuren, she's not officially part of the Ostallgau district association. However, Leaveringhaus emphasized that Kaufbeuren belongs to them and they aim to work together to advance the region. Stillfried's candidacy serves as a clear declaration of unity.

Who's running for Zinnecker's succession?

The delegates' assembly remained tight-lipped about Zinnecker's succession, with no clear candidate emerging. The withdrawal of Leaveringhaus from the CSU chief post was perceived as his intent to fully focus on his role as Obergünzburger mayor. He announced his re-candidacy in April and will be eligible for retirement by the time of the next municipal election in 2032.
