Ludlow Panthers Gear Up for 2025 Season with Balance of Experience and Youth

The Ludlow Panthers, fresh off back-to-back eight-win seasons, are preparing for the 2025 campaign under head coach John "Woody" McMillen. The focus this season is on balancing experienced upperclassmen with young talent, aiming to build on their recent success.

Sophomore quarterback Miller Reed, who threw for 880 yards and 10 touchdowns with 10 interceptions in his first season, is expected to have a breakout year running the offense. He will be joined by senior Jackson Mays, a versatile "Swiss Army Knife" who has played quarterback, wide receiver, and defensive back, and sophomore running back Nicholi Abbott, who transferred in from New York and adds flexibility on both offense and defense due to his wrestling background.

Defensively, the Panthers return key players like junior Jacob Cook, who led with 31 tackles, and secondary starters Mays, Andre Englemon Jr., and Jaylen Stone, who all contributed interceptions and tackles last season. Sophomore Nico Abbott and freshman Deaken Reed, who will see action at running back and linebacker respectively, will be called upon to produce for the Panthers in their first season.

However, the team faces significant roster changes, especially on defense where 2024’s top nine tacklers have left. Six starters are returning on offense and six on defense for the Panthers, which should provide a solid foundation.

Coach McMillen has mentioned minor changes to the team's offensive and defensive schemes for the upcoming season. He expressed optimism about the team's performance this year, citing a successful offseason and spring session.

Ludlow, who had not won a district title in 48 seasons before McMillen took charge of the program, compete in Class 1A, District 4, alongside Brossart, Holy Cross, and Trimble County. The season opener will be against the Newport Wildcats, who defeated Ludlow in the 2024 regular season and playoffs.

The 2025 schedule for the Ludlow Panthers includes games against Walton-Verona, Dayton, Gallatin County, Bellevue, Trimble County, Brossart, Holy Cross, St. Henry, and no home game is scheduled before Oct. 10. Three of the first six opponents on Ludlow's schedule are different from last year, aiming to expose the team to various styles of offense and defense.

With a record of 16-9 in two seasons at Ludlow and 36-43 in six seasons overall, Coach McMillen is optimistic about the Panthers' prospects for the 2025 season. The team's success will depend on defensive depth and the ability of young players like Reed, Abbott, and Reed to step up and contribute.
