Distribution company Dulac secures French rights for competition film 'The Currents', originally showcased at Toronto and San Sebastiáin film festivals, courtesy of Luxbox Films. (EXCLUSIVE)
In an exciting development for the film industry, the elegant drama 'The Currents' has secured its first major territory sale. Luxbox Films picked up the film last July, and Dulac Distribution plans to release it in 80 screens nationwide by the first quarter of 2026.
Directed by Milagros Mumenthaler, 'The Currents' is a co-production between Alina Film (Switzerland) and Ruda Cine (Argentina). The drama follows the story of Lina, a successful 34-year-old Argentine stylist who experiences a change upon returning home after winning an award in Switzerland. Her past catches up with her in Buenos Aires.
Isabel Aimé Gonzales Sola delivers a superb performance as Lina, a woman who left Argentina during the military dictatorship and returns to find her place of belonging. The cast also includes Esteban Bigliardi.
'The Currents' is a subtle, almost imperceptible variation on the drama genre. Milagros Mumenthaler's protagonist protects herself and puts on certain facades, making for a nuanced portrayal of the unsettling main character. The director offers a compelling exploration of a contradictory character who moves forward without confronting anything.
Milagros Mumenthaler's career in filmmaking began in Geneva, where her family fled Argentina during the country's military dictatorship. Her previous work includes three features, with 'The Idea of a Lake' premiering at Locarno 2016 and competing in San Sebastian, Busan, and Rotterdam in 2017.
'The Currents' has already received critical acclaim, winning five awards at Locarno 2011, including the Golden Leopard for 'Back to Stay' ('Abrir puertas y ventanas'). The acquisition was made in advance of the film's world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF). After its world debut at TIFF's Platform competition, 'The Currents' will compete in the official selections of the San Sebastián and New York film festivals.
Film enthusiasts can look forward to experiencing 'The Currents' on the big screen in the coming months. With its captivating storyline, exceptional performances, and thought-provoking themes, this Swiss-Argentine co-production promises to be a must-see for audiences everywhere.
