Disruptions on French Railway System, Particularly on Tuesday, 6th May, Dominantly Affected
Day Two of SNCF Strike to Disrupt Paris Region Commutes
scheduling software, controllers' work bonus, and more. Let's dive in!
Today marks the second day of the SNCF strike, with the Île-de-France region expected to face the brunt of the disruptions. Railway workers, rallied by Sud-Rail and the CGT, are demanding the implementation of a new scheduling system. The current system is deemed excessively restrictive, with sudden changes to work organization causing unrest among drivers and controllers. Controllers are also pressing for a €100 monthly bonus increase, as reported by BFMTV.
Travelers in the Paris region should brace for disrupted RER train circulation on Tuesday, May 6. Specifically, one out of two trains will run north on the RER B, with two out of three south of the line. The connection at Gare du Nord will remain open. One out of two trains will operate for the RER C, and four out of five for the RER D. Lines N and V will see one out of two trains running, with four out of five for line H and two out of three for line U. No disruptions are anticipated on lines J, K, L, P, and R.
With the May holidays approaching, SNCF will release information about the TGV service for the upcoming weekend. Away from Île-de-France, train circulation will be disrupted in Normandy, particularly between Paris-Montparnasse and Granville. SNCF also anticipates "very disrupted" train service in New Aquitaine, while TGV trains will operate normally elsewhere due to the notice period for ASCT controllers, which begins on May 9. At this time, high-speed train traffic may be reduced as they rely on controller presence, unlike TER trains.
The current strike at SNCF, initiated on May 5, 2025, is rooted in workers' opposition to a new scheduling system. While specific details about the software remain unclear, labor tensions seem to stem from concerns over its impact on work conditions, potentially altering shift patterns, increasing monitoring, or reducing flexibility. The lack of satisfactory wage increases added to the friction, with unions criticizing the proposed 2.2% increase as insufficient.
Modernization efforts, such as SNCF Réseau's IT overhaul with ServiceNow and the launch of Tesmo for digital mobility services, are a supporting trend within the industry. However, it remains unclear how these reforms are related to the scheduling software causing the strike. Despite facing ongoing criticism, the SNCF aims to complete its modernization journey while ensuring minimal disruptions to passengers and maximizing the service during the strike period.
