Disregarded Fireworks Restrictions in Dusseldorf's Old Town: Authorities Witness Powerlessness Against Violations
In the heart of Düsseldorf's Altstadt, the New Year's Eve celebration of 2025 was marked by a disregard for the fireworks ban. Despite the efforts of the authorities to maintain safety, unauthorised pyrotechnics lit up the night sky along the Rhine.
The identities of those setting off the fireworks remained unknown, making it difficult for the authorities to apprehend them. The police, however, resorted to pulling out identified rocket igniters from the crowd via video or spontaneously. Yet, most fireworks remained undetected during the celebration.
The municipal authority and the police continuously removed fireworks from circulation, but several more visitors arrived with pyrotechnics. Confiscated fireworks were disposed of directly into water containers by employees of the Düsseldorf municipal authority.
The jubilant crowd, undeterred by the authorities' efforts, ridiculed them and immediately set off more pyrotechnics. Rockets were shot from hands towards the Rhine or into the crowd, causing a potential risk to both the revellers and the authorities.
Unfortunately, a woman's hair was partially burned during the celebration, underscoring the dangers posed by the uncontrolled use of fireworks.
Young men celebrated as self-proclaimed fire dancers during the New Year's Eve festivities. Some groups waved Syrian national flags while dancing and celebrating, adding a diverse and vibrant atmosphere to the night.
Despite the chaotic scenes, there were moments of defiance and resistance. Young men danced around a spraying fire fountain, asserting their refusal to be deterred by the authorities. The celebration continued into the early hours of the new year, with visitors from the Rhine flowing into the old town, adding to the festive atmosphere.
As the city of Düsseldorf looks towards the future, it is hoped that future celebrations will be safer and more controlled, ensuring the enjoyment of all while minimising the risks associated with unauthorised fireworks.
