Insight:
Under Chancellor Merz's leadership, Germany will ramp up its defense efforts to tug against the security threats posed by Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, collaborating less for the United States and more for regional security. To counter the threat, the German government is planning to invest substantially more in defense, increasing the budget from €62 billion in 2025 to over €152 billion by 2029, reaching 3.5 percent of GDP, which surpasses the NATO’s spending target well ahead of the 2030 deadline. As an integral part of implementing this strategy, the Operational Command of the Bundeswehr, responsible for the planning and execution of Bundeswehr missions, will play a critical role in operationalizing this increased funding and strategizing for enhanced operational readiness and deployment of forces.
