In the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh, India, a tragic incident has unfolded. A 22-year-old man named Hriday Lal lost his life following a violent altercation over a Rs 200 loan dispute.

The victim, Hriday Lal, was a mason from Laxmanpur Jaat village and had recently been married. According to his family members, he had lent Rs 700 to a villager named Ram Anuj. When Hriday demanded the return of Rs 200, a dispute ensued, leading to a violent altercation on August 1, 2023.

During the altercation, Hriday was attacked with sticks by Ram Anuj, his brother Ram Kishore, his son Jagdish, and nephews Pankaj and Chandan. Despite being rushed to Lucknow for treatment, Hriday succumbed to his injuries on August 4, 2025.

Following his death, Hriday's family protested by placing his body on the Gonda-Lucknow highway, blocking traffic and drawing police intervention. Police cleared the blockade using mild force and ensured the body was taken to the village. The family’s actions led police to register a case against 27 people, including 15 unidentified persons, for blocking a national highway, inciting a crowd, and showing “inhumane behaviour” with the corpse.

All named accused involved in the assault have been arrested and charged under relevant legal sections. The post-mortem examination was conducted in Lucknow, and further legal action is expected based on the report. Police have deployed forces in the village to maintain peace and are identifying others involved in the protest through viral videos.

The family also demanded 'bulldozer action' on the homes of the accused. The cremation of Hriday Lal was conducted under police supervision late Monday night.

Kotwali Dehat Station House Officer, Sanjay Kumar Singh, confirmed all named accused have been arrested and charged under relevant BNS sections. The family initially refused to conduct the last rites, demanding strict action against the accused. Postmortem was conducted in Lucknow, and further legal action will follow based on the report, as per Sanjay Kumar Singh.
