Dispute between Zarah Sultana and Jeremy Corbyn allegedly propelling voters towards the Green Party after their recent party disagreement
In the lead-up to the founding conference of the new left-wing party, scheduled for November, tensions are running high. Zarah Sultana, a prominent figure in the party, has accused party leader Jeremy Corbyn of overseeing a 'sexist boys' club' and handing 'sole financial control of members' money' to his ally Karie Murphy.
Sultana insists that the membership portal was created 'in line with the road map set out to members on Monday and is a safe, secure, legitimate portal for the news'. However, more than 750,000 people have signed up to the party's website under the placeholder name of Your Party, with over 20,000 people reportedly signing up to the £55 membership, equating to over £1 million in funding in a single morning.
Corbyn, on the other hand, dismissed a membership fee email sent out to Your Party supporters as 'unauthorised' and sought legal advice. He urged backers to ignore the email and cancel any direct debits that may have been set up.
High-profile left-wing figures such as Owen Jones and Ash Sarkar have criticized Corbyn and Sultana, suggesting that the party's management issues could push people towards the Green Party. Sarkar even went as far as to suggest that it may be difficult for Your Party to continue with both leaders, with Keir Starmer (Labour leader) and Zack Polanski (Green Party leader) potentially benefiting.
Sultana has also accused Corbyn of excluding women from decision-making processes, stating that she had been treated appallingly and excluded completely by party officials, who refused to allow any other women with voting rights on the Working Group, blocking the gender-balanced committee that both Jeremy and she had signed up to.
Your Party has denied these accusations and said it had sent the case to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the data protection law watchdog, over suspected misuse of supporters' details. The ICO can issue fines up to £17.5m or 4% of global turnover, or pass fraud and negligence cases to the police.
A draft of the party's rules and policy positions is set to be published earlier this week, followed by national assemblies in October and an online vote on the new name for the party. The current Executive Committee of Your Party is not provided in the available search results, so their members and functions within the organization cannot be specified based on these sources.
The new party was founded by Ayoub Khan, Adnan Hussain, Iqbal Mohamed, and Shockat Adam, who are members of the Independent Alliance of MPs, along with Jeremy Corbyn. As the founding conference approaches, it remains to be seen how these controversies will affect the party's future.
