Dispute arises over Flemm's plan: replacement of Solinger Theater and Concert Hall renovation with a new structure

In the heart of Solingen, a lively cultural-political podium discussion took place recently, focusing on the future of the city's theater and concert hall. The event, moderated by Andreas Schäfer and Désirée Barretta, brought together local political parties, citizen initiatives, and cultural activists to debate the merits of building a new theater and concert hall versus renovating the existing structures.

At the centre of the debate were supporters of new construction, who argued that a modern facility could cater to today's cultural and technical demands, potentially revitalising Solingen's cultural scene and attracting broader audiences. On the other hand, proponents of renovation emphasised the importance of preserving the historical and architectural value of the current theater and concert hall. They believe that renovation, while enabling necessary modernization, is more cost-effective and respectful to the city's heritage.

Local political groups took official stances, often reflecting their approach to fiscal responsibility, cultural investment, and urban development priorities. For instance, some parties advocated for sustainable use of existing resources, while others focused on long-term cultural growth.

Citizen initiatives and cultural activists voiced concerns or support based on community participation, accessibility, and the symbolic role of the theater as a cultural hub reflecting local identity.

Daniel Flemm, the CDU faction leader and mayoral candidate, proposed a new construction in a different location. His plan for promoting free arts includes a fixed base funding in the municipal budget and flexible project funding through the Gerd Kaimer Foundation. However, the original renovation cost of the theater and concert hall was 5 million euros, but it has now risen to over 30 million euros, raising questions about the feasibility of new construction.

Ruth Fischer-Bieniek (Greens) expressed gratitude to Flemm for bringing up the topic and emphasised the importance of considering how the city presents itself to the outside world. Martin Bender (BfS) proposed a citizen's decision on the future of the theater and concert hall. Richard Collings (FDP) did not express an opinion on the new topic of promoting free arts, but stated that he doesn't tie culture to buildings but to people, and that it's important to have this discussion now.

Josef Neumann (SPD) believes that the theater and concert hall does not need demolition, but renovation. Jan Höttges (SGZ e.V. i. Gr.) considers a new construction too expensive due to the significant investment already made in renovation.

Approximately 200 Solingen residents attended the discussion at the Cobra, demonstrating the city's interest in shaping its cultural future. The SPD, The Left, BfS, and SGZ do not support the idea of a new construction for the theater and concert hall.

As the debate continues, it is clear that political theater and cultural venues function as important social and political spaces that must anchor themselves in local debates and reflect contemporary societal aspirations.
