Dispersal with Batons, Legal Action Against 16 Individuals for Allegedly Obstructing the Path of the Muharram Procession in Ujjain
In the heart of Ujjain, a significant dispute arose during the traditional 9th Muharram horse procession near Khajurwadi Masjid. The incident occurred when some participants, led by Irfan Khan alias Lalla, allegedly attempted to divert from the pre-approved route, breaking through police barricades towards Abdalpura. This defiance led to a violent confrontation with the police, resulting in a mild lathi charge and injuries to two police officers.
The Seerat Committee, a key representative body, has expressed its disapproval of the route violation, with Joint Secretary Maqsood Ali stating that changes in the route should have been communicated in prior meetings if necessary. The Committee has emphasised that those responsible for this breach must face action.
Following the incident, approximately sixteen people, including Irfan Lalla and other organisers, have been booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rioting, unlawful assembly, and obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duties. The police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under sections 191, 192, and 132 of the BNS, including charges related to obstruction of public servants and disobedience of lawful orders.
Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma reiterated that the procession route was clearly decided in advance and that extensive meetings had been held with procession representatives to ensure compliance. However, the defiance led to the chaotic situation that unfolded. Barricades were broken, and mild force was used to disperse the crowd, according to Sharma.
In response to the incident, the Ujjain police are conducting a thorough review to avoid such confrontations in the future. The police have also attached 48 personnel to police lines due to multiple complaints of negligence and misconduct related to the incident. The injured policemen are reported to be stable.
This conflict serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to pre-approved routes and maintaining peaceful processions during religious events. The Ujjain police and the Seerat Committee are working together to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future, upholding the peace and tranquility that the city is known for.
Politics and general news in Ujjain are buzzing following the violent confrontation during the 9th Muharram horse procession. The incident, which led to the booking of several individuals under crime-and-justice related sections, has highlighted the need for better communication and adherence to pre-approved routes, especially during religious events.
