Protesters Clash with Police in Kolkata, Demanding Justice for RG Kar Rape Victim

On August 9, 2025, a violent confrontation erupted in Kolkata, India, as protesters clashed with the police during a rally demanding justice for the RG Kar rape and murder victim. The protest, known as 'Nabanna Abhiyan', aimed to reach the state secretariat, Nabanna, which houses the office of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The organizers of the protest, led by the victim's parents, had planned the rally to mark one year since the horrific incident. Despite tight security arrangements and prohibitory orders in place around Nabanna, the protesters attempted to breach iron wall barricades at Santragachi, in the Howrah district.

The police took strict action against the protesters, baton-charging the crowd at multiple points, including Park Street crossing, to disperse them. This led to violent confrontations involving clashes and damage. Police set up high iron barricades to stop progress and filed seven cases related to violence and lawbreaking during the protest.

At least 100 protesters were reportedly injured in the police action. The victim's mother, who participated in the rally, claimed she sustained a head injury during the police action. She also alleged that police roughed her up and broke her traditional conch shell bangle, known as 'shankha'.

The victim's husband had claimed that they had a court permission for the rally, but were stopped from joining the march. Sanjay Roy, a civic police volunteer, was convicted in the case and sentenced to life imprisonment this January.

In a recent development, the parents of the victim met CBI Director Praveen Sood in Delhi to express their dissatisfaction with the agency's probe into their daughter's rape-murder. The police have initiated investigations into both protester violence and allegations of police excesses.

Meanwhile, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in West Bengal assembly, and other BJP MLAs staged a protest at Park Street-Jawaharlal Nehru Road crossing, expressing solidarity with the protesters.

The young doctor was raped and murdered at the state-run RG Kar hospital last year, sparking nationwide outrage and calls for justice. The victim's mother continues to express her desire to reach the secretariat and seek justice for her daughter.
