Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom Mourns the Loss of Gino, a Beloved Western Lowland Gorilla
In a heartfelt tribute, Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom theme park in Orlando, Florida, announced the passing of Gino, a critically endangered western lowland gorilla who was a member of the park since its opening on April 22, 1998.
Gino, a 400-pound standout at the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, had been an original inhabitant of the park and left an "incredible legacy" for all staffers and guests. His story will live on in the future of his species, a population that has seen a decline of more than 60% over the past two to three decades due to threats from poachers, disease, and the destructive poaching and logging industries.
The Ebola virus has also played a significant role in the decline of western lowland gorillas, making conservation efforts even more crucial.
Despite the challenges faced by his species, Gino's life at the Animal Kingdom was filled with moments of joy and inspiration. He was known for his regular chest-beating displays as visitors walked by, a behaviour that was both captivating and a testament to his strong and vibrant personality.

In his tribute, Penning, the park's vice president, expressed his gratitude towards Gino, stating that he would always be part of their family. Gino's legacy extends beyond the Animal Kingdom, as he fathered 14 offspring during his time at the park, contributing to the conservation efforts for his critically endangered species.
