Disney's Animal Kingdom experiences deep sorrow as a 44-year-old gorilla passes away, leaving staff distraught: 'We are devastated'
Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom Mourns the Loss of Gino, a Beloved Western Lowland Gorilla
In a heartfelt tribute, Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom theme park in Orlando, Florida, announced the passing of Gino, a critically endangered western lowland gorilla who was a member of the park since its opening on April 22, 1998.
Gino, a 400-pound standout at the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, had been an original inhabitant of the park and left an "incredible legacy" for all staffers and guests. His story will live on in the future of his species, a population that has seen a decline of more than 60% over the past two to three decades due to threats from poachers, disease, and the destructive poaching and logging industries.
The Ebola virus has also played a significant role in the decline of western lowland gorillas, making conservation efforts even more crucial.
Despite the challenges faced by his species, Gino's life at the Animal Kingdom was filled with moments of joy and inspiration. He was known for his regular chest-beating displays as visitors walked by, a behaviour that was both captivating and a testament to his strong and vibrant personality.
Gino was not just a gorilla; he was a part of the Animal Kingdom family. His contributions went beyond his physical presence, as he willingly participated in a programme where gorillas help with their own medical care. This unique approach to conservation not only benefited Gino but also set a precedent for the care and well-being of other gorillas in the park.
In his tribute, Penning, the park's vice president, expressed his gratitude towards Gino, stating that he would always be part of their family. Gino's legacy extends beyond the Animal Kingdom, as he fathered 14 offspring during his time at the park, contributing to the conservation efforts for his critically endangered species.
As we remember Gino, let us also remember the challenges faced by western lowland gorillas and the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect them. Gino's life serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of these efforts and the lasting memories he has left behind.
