Disney Veteran Michael Eisner Criticizes Senior Management Over Jimmy Kimmel's Suspension and Submission to MAGA Agenda: "What Happened to the Decisive Leadership?"
In a rare public statement, former Walt Disney Company executive Michael Eisner has expressed his disapproval over the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel's late-night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! Eisner, who is known for his role as the first CEO of the Disney-owned ABC, compared the current situation to a hypothetical Constitution that allows law abridging freedom of speech or press in one's political or financial self-interest.
According to reports, the shutdown of Jimmy Kimmel Live! was allegedly due to FCC threats and an affiliate owner revolt. The current Disney leadership involved in the indefinite pause decision is tied to ABC executives under Disney's corporate governance, though specific individual names are not directly cited in the available sources.
Eisner's post, made on Friday, criticised the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel as an example of out-of-control intimidation. He finds the decision widely derided as an attack on the First Amendment and free speech. The suspension is considered by Eisner as another example of political or financial self-interest abridging freedom of speech or press.
Interestingly, Donald Trump, the former US President, has rejoiced in the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel from ABC's air. Trump reportedly encouraged FCC chair Brendon Carr to go after ABC's The View and others who cross him. Meanwhile, Walden is leading a BTS effort to get Kimmel back on the air.
Unease and disappointment with Iger and Walden's decision to preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely has emerged in the upper echelon of Disney management. Public figures like Stephen Colbert have mocked the leadership for alleged fear of political pressure and censorship, suggesting internal Disney/ABC executives acted out of apprehension regarding government retaliation.
Despite the controversy, the two sides are still far apart on what Kimmel's return would look and sound like. Kimmel's contract is up in a few months, and it remains to be seen whether he will return to ABC or seek opportunities elsewhere.
In response to Eisner's critique, Disney reps did not respond to the website's request for comment. Eisner, who reportedly made the decision to shut down Jimmy Kimmel Live! on September 17 alongside Bob Iger and Dana Walden, finds Jimmy Kimmel very talented and funny. His relationship with Iger may be feeling some strain now.
The April 2024 proxy fight saw Nelson Peltz and his Trian Fund Management, backed by former Marvel CEO Ike Perlmuter, attempting another bid to win seats on Disney's board but were unsuccessful, with help from Eisner and the board. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how Disney will navigate this challenging period and whether Jimmy Kimmel will return to late-night television.
