Disney+ show "Goosebumps" cancellation leaves viewers in suspense - hopeful that a competing streaming platform will bring it back to life
After two successful seasons on Disney+, the beloved Goosebumps series is set to depart, but its future is far from certain. Producer Sony Pictures Television has announced plans to shop the show to new outlets, exploring different creative directions for the iconic IP[1][4][5].
With Sony's involvement, streaming platforms that cater to supernatural/horror and youth-oriented content are prime candidates for the Goosebumps revival. These include Netflix, known for its investment in horror and supernatural series, and Amazon Prime Video, which has produced and hosted several genre series[2]. Hulu, while part of the Disney corporate umbrella, operates separately and has a history of continuing series dropped by Disney+. Other possibilities include Apple TV+ and Paramount+, although they are less directly linked[3].
The broad cross-generational fanbase of Goosebumps and its versatile nature, having taken many forms in the past, make it an attractive proposition for a streaming service to acquire or reboot[1][4]. The recent seasons received decent critical reception and viewership, further supporting the potential for revival[2][3][5].
Shudder, the leading horror streaming service, could also be a suitable contender for Goosebumps due to its interest in horror content. Shudder recently adapted the found footage horror movie series Creep into a series[6]. A24 horror movies are consistently picked up by HBO Max, known for its dark storytelling, making it another potential contender[7].
It's intriguing to consider if Shudder might have a hand in re-developing Goosebumps. Many streaming services, including HBO Max and Hulu, might express interest in acquiring the series due to its massive IP[8]. The high-quality horror content being produced on top streaming services could potentially benefit the revived Goosebumps series.
While no official new streaming home has been announced, the future of Goosebumps is uncertain but not completely dead in the water[4][5]. There's an indication that we could see this horror classic find a new home among the major streaming services in the near future.
