Gina Carano, the former star of Disney's hit series The Mandalorian, has reached a settlement with Disney and Lucasfilm in August 2025, resolving her wrongful termination lawsuit. The multi-year dispute, which stemmed from Carano's firing in 2021 due to controversial social media posts, concluded without disclosing the financial terms or further details[1][2][3][4].

The controversy began when Carano posted content that drew significant backlash, including comparing political divisions in the U.S. to the historical persecution of Jews during the Holocaust, which Disney deemed unacceptable[1]. Carano argued her termination was wrongful and due to discrimination against her conservative views.

Despite the heated debates, Lucasfilm stated that Carano was always well-respected by her colleagues during her time on The Mandalorian. Disney, on the other hand, has been involved in the United States' "culture wars" in recent years[5].

In March 2021, US regulators under the Trump administration announced an investigation into diversity efforts at the Walt Disney Company[6]. Carano publicly supported Donald Trump's election campaign and spoke at a campaign rally in Las Vegas[7].

Carano's social media posts continued to stir controversy, with her claiming she lost a potential role on "Rangers of the New Republic" worth between $150,000 to $250,000 per episode. She also enraged members of the trans community by writing "boop/bop/beep" as her preferred pronouns on Twitter[8]. Another post mocked people for wearing multiple masks during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The lawsuit was backed by billionaire Elon Musk, who funded Carano's California lawsuit against Disney[9]. Despite the settlement, Disney "look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future," according to a statement sent to AFP[10]. Carano, for her part, expressed hope for healing and moving forward in her career in the arts.
