Gina Carano's Lawsuit Against Disney and Lucasfilm Settled

After a lengthy legal battle, Gina Carano's wrongful termination lawsuit against The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm has been settled. Both parties have confirmed the resolution, but they have chosen to keep the specific terms confidential.

The lawsuit, filed in 2024, came after Carano was dismissed from the popular series The Mandalorian in 2021 due to controversial social media posts that Disney claimed were damaging to their brand. Disney initially sought dismissal of the suit, citing their First Amendment rights to dissociate from Carano’s views.

The settlement was financially supported by Elon Musk, who backed Carano’s lawsuit. Musk, the owner of X and CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX, publicly expressed his support for Carano. In response, Carano wrote on X that she is grateful to Musk for funding her lawsuit.

In her response to the lawsuit, Carano accused Disney of discrimination. Disney's lawyers, however, argued that they have a constitutional right not to associate their artistic expression with Carano’s speech.

The settlement marks a notable shift in Disney's official position. After the lawsuit ended, they issued a statement praising Carano's professionalism and respect from colleagues. They also expressed hope to work with her again in the future. Carano, in turn, called the settlement “the best outcome for all parties involved” and expressed her desire to continue in the arts and invited her supporters to join her in the next chapter of her career.

There is speculation that Carano could return in some capacity to the Star Wars franchise, as Lucasfilm mentioned looking forward to “identifying opportunities to work together”. This could potentially mark a new beginning for Carano in the entertainment industry.
