Disney discusses potential expansion of 'Avatar' into animation with James Cameron, with plans for an animated feature that could be streamed or released theatrically.
James Cameron, the creator of the acclaimed "Avatar" franchise, is set to delve deeper into the rich world of Pandora with an animated anthology series. In collaboration with Disney, Cameron plans to create a narrative expansion that will offer fans a variety of new stories from unexpected angles, similar in spirit to "The Animatrix," an animated anthology series for "The Matrix" film trilogy.
The upcoming animated series is part of a strategic move to broaden the Avatar franchise beyond its feature films. Cameron has spoken to Disney about expanding the franchise into animation and has referenced "The Animatrix" as a great example for adding texture and detail to the world.
"Avatar: Fire and Ash," the third movie in the Avatar film franchise, is scheduled for a theatrical release on Dec. 19, 2024. This film will introduce a more nefarious Na'vi tribe and promise an intense adventure, serving as a visual feast for audiences.
In addition to the live-action movies, the proposed Avatar expansion will include an animated anthology series. The series aims to explore unexpected stories within the Avatar world, including backstories of characters and off-camera events like the first expedition to Pandora. The series is still in early development, with Cameron gathering stories and finding animators to bring these tales to life.
"Avatar: Fire and Ash" will showcase more of Pandora than previously seen, providing a broader view of the alien world. Animated features might also be included in the expansion, potentially for streaming platforms or theaters, expanding the lore beyond the live-action movies.
The next "Avatar" movie, like its predecessors, will have higher emotional stakes. However, the animated series offers a unique opportunity to delve into tangential events that were not shown in the movies, providing a fresh perspective on the Avatar universe.
With Cameron's vision and Disney's backing, fans can expect an exciting journey into the heart of Pandora, uncovering new stories and expanding their understanding of this fascinating world. Stay tuned for more updates on the upcoming animated Avatar anthology series.
