Disney confirms the shutdown of Muppet*Vision 3D at Hollywood Studios, yet there's a silver lining to the announcement.
Disney's Hollywood Studios is set for a significant transformation, as the theme park announces the creation of a new land themed around Disney and Pixar's beloved film, "Monsters, Inc." This exciting development was unveiled at this summer's D23, the Ultimate Disney Fan Event.
The change will see the south side of the park welcoming Mike, Sulley, and their Monstropolis friends. The current Muppets Courtyard and Muppet*Vision 3D, a staple of the park since 1991, will be closing permanently on June 8, 2025, to make way for this new expansion.
The Muppets will be moving to a new home, with a Muppets-themed roller coaster set to be the first of its kind in a Disney park. The first-ever suspended coaster in a Disney park will also be part of the new "Monsters, Inc."-themed land.
Construction has already begun, with a large 10-acre backstage area behind Muppets Courtyard having been walled off to support this development. The new area will include a flying door rollercoaster, Harryhausen’s Restaurant, and a new Glob Theater featuring a Monsters, Inc. show.
While Muppet*Vision 3D has closed its doors for the final time, there are internal discussions at Disney about potentially bringing it back in a new location within the park. However, no official public announcement has been made about this potential move.
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, currently themed around Aerosmith, will also be getting a makeover, with the Muppets taking over Sunset Boulevard. This re-theme will breathe new life into both Rock 'n' Roller Coaster and Muppet Courtyard.
Disney is also having creative conversations and exploring ways to preserve the film and other parts of the Muppets experience for fans. Guests will still be able to visit the laugh factory that powers the city and meet their favourite cuddly characters in the new land.
This marks a significant shift as Disney focuses on expanding its Pixar footprint and introducing new experiences based on Monsters, Inc. to Disney's Hollywood Studios. The anticipation among fans is palpable, as they eagerly await the opening of this exciting new land.
