Disney+ and Hulu US Subscribers Face Price Hike Amid Kimmel Controversy
Disney+ and Hulu subscribers in the US will see a price increase from October 21. Meanwhile, ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! following comments about the murder of Charlie Kirk, which led to a spike in searches for 'cancel Disney+' and 'cancel Hulu'.
The price hike comes as Disney announced increases for its streaming services, unrelated to the Kimmel controversy. The new price for a Disney+ and Hulu package will be $12.99.
During Kimmel's suspension, more than 1.7 million subscribers cancelled their subscriptions to Disney+ and Hulu. Stephen Colbert reported that searches for 'cancel Disney+' and 'cancel Hulu' spiked during this period. However, searches for 'cancel ESPN' did not show a similar trend.
Kimmel returned to the show on September 6, drawing 6.2 million viewers, nearly four times the usual audience. He addressed his comments but stopped short of apologizing. Disney has not confirmed the subscriber loss, and there's no evidence to support Marisa Kabas' claim about the number of cancellations.
The price increase for Disney+ and Hulu will take effect from October 21. Despite the subscriber cancellations during Kimmel's absence, Disney has not linked the price increase to the controversy. The impact of Kimmel's comments and subsequent suspension on subscriber numbers remains unclear.
