Disillusioned Coach Finds Joy in Flag Football, Dos Pueblos Team Soars

Doug Caines, once disillusioned with coaching football, has found new joy as the flag football coach at Dos Pueblos High. His team, led by quarterback Kacey Hurley and star receiver/defensive back Brooklyn Hendricks, is enjoying a successful season with a record of 18-2.

Caines returned to coaching in 2023, drawn by the enthusiasm and coachability of his young female players. He finds their passion for the game refreshing, a stark contrast to the pressures of traditional 11-man football. The team's success is evident, with victories over strong Orange County teams and a record of 18-2.

Hurley, previously the team's center, has transitioned to quarterback, throwing 49 touchdown passes this season. Hendricks, a former softball player, has made a significant impact as a receiver and defensive back, with over 30 interceptions in her career. The team's positive atmosphere, focus on fun, and appreciation for the purity of flag football have contributed to their success.

As the regular season ends on Oct. 15, with playoffs and championships scheduled for late October and early November, Caines predicts a trend of veteran 11-man football coaches switching to flag football for a more enjoyable coaching experience. He feels revitalized and rejuvenated by his time with the Dos Pueblos flag football team, experiencing 'magical' moments that have rekindled his love for coaching.
