Disgruntled Former RAF Terrorist, Klette, Voices Displeasure Over Expensive Legal Procedures
In a surprising turn of events, the trial of former RAF terrorist Daniela Klette commenced in an unconventional venue - a renovated riding hall in Verden-Eitze. Klette, accused of attempted murder and living in Bremen at times, expressed her disapproval of the temporary courtroom.
Klette harshly criticized the makeshift courtroom, suggesting that state funds could have been more intelligently allocated for swimming pools, women's shelters, or refugee support. She contended that the sizeable renovated space was "completely disproportionate."
Defense lawyers argued for the trial to be relocated to the Verden Regional Court, citing the central location and sufficient room for co-plaintiffs, media, and the general public. They criticized the oversized hall as an unnecessary expense, questioning its implications on Klette's perceived threat level.
Co-plaintiffs and the public prosecutor's office, however, have no issue with the riding hall. A co-plaintiff representative dismissed defense claims as an attempt to divert attention from the serious charges. Ahmad Mohamad, spokesperson for the regional court, acknowledged the unconventional nature of the trial location but justified it as practical, given the venue's compliance with courtroom requirements after renovations.
Security measures were assured for all involved parties.
The public prosecutor's office has been investigating Klette and her suspected accomplices Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg for years. The trio is accused of stealing over 2.7 million euros in a series of robberies, with Klette arrested in her Berlin apartment last February. Staub and Garweg remain at large.
In the context of the defense's objection, potential concerns include the venue's unconventional nature, questions of fairness and neutrality, logistical challenges, privacy and security concerns, precedent-setting, public perception, media access, and psychological impact. However, specific legal arguments and evidence will be crucial to substantiate objections.
Bremer, expressing disapproval, advocated for state funds allocated to facilities like swimming pools, women's shelters, and refugee support instead of the expansion of war-and-conflicts-related politics, citing the "completely disproportionate" renovated riding hall as a trial venue. The defense's criticism of Klette's case also extended to the potential implications on her perceived threat level and corresponding elevated security measures amidst accusations of crime-and-justice activities.
