Discussions underway in Borșa, Northern Romania, regarding a proposed 25 km ski slope development, with an estimated budget of €50 million.
Venturing into Winter Sports Paradise: Revamping Ski Operations in Romania's Maramureș
Strap on your ski boots and get ready for an exhilarating upgrade! The charming town of Borșa, nestled in Romania's northern landscapes, is preparing for an epic transformation of its skiing scene. In an ambitious move, the town is in talks with the North-West Regional Development Agency to secure at least EUR 50 million for the project. This fund will be sourced from the Regional Operational Program for the 2027-2032 period, as revealed by Borșa's mayor, Ion Sorin Timiș.
The primary goal of the revamp is the interconnection of three existing ski areas - Prislop Pass, Runcu Știol, and the Olympic slope in Borșa - resulting in approximately 25 kilometers of breathtaking ski trails.
"We're merging the Prislop Pass slope with the old one in Runcu Știol and adding the one in the Olympic slope. The initial phase will encompass a staggering 25-kilometer ski slope project, incorporating six new installations and a snow-supplying reservoir in the Știol area," explained the mayor. Topographical surveys covering a vast 4,800 hectares have already been completed, and feasibility studies are still underway.
Moreover, a new and exciting project dubbed the "Belvedere Terrace and Astronomical Observatory" is set to break ground in May. Perched atop the summit, this facility will consist of four captivating structures designed to captivate adventurers and sightseers alike: a mountain rescue shelter, a cozy mountaintop lodge for overnight stays, a suspenseful glass-arched terrace boasting a panoramic 180-degree view of the resort and the Maramureș Mountains, and a 360-degree terrace that invites visitors to immerse themselves in the stunning surroundings.
The ambitious mayor has even more up his sleeve. Alongside the ski slope project, plans for a spa center with indoor and outdoor pools are in the works. To add another thrilling dimension, an adventure park-style facility complete with 13 installments, functional in both winter and summer, will be erected between the intermediate gondola station in Borșa and the reservoir (1,300 meters above sea level). The adventure park will feature a summer-ready snow slope that's durable enough for the highest temperatures.
In addition to the revitalization of the ski slopes, a cable car to Pietrosul Rodnei, the highest peak in the Eastern Carpathians, is planned, per the Ministry of Tourism's approval.
