Seahawks Eyeing Old Friend: Could Shaquill Griffin Return to Defense?

Get ready, Seattle Seahawks fans, because your team is shaking things up during the offseason! After trading Geno Smith and DK Metcalf, the offensive roster will look different, but don't forget about the defense! According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Seahawks are in talks with free-agent cornerback Shaquill Griffin, aiming for a reunion to boost their secondary [1][2][3].

Griffin, a former third-round pick of the Seahawks back in 2017, plays the part of a seasoned veteran, with four years spent in the Emerald City and a Pro Bowl appearance in 2019. In the 2024 season with the Vikings, Griffin racked up 41 tackles, two interceptions, and six passes defended in 17 games [2]. Over his career, Griffin has amassed an impressive 407 tackles, nine interceptions, 56 passes defended, a sack, and a forced fumble [2].

If the Seahawks and Griffin can come to terms, Seattle could once again benefit from his defensive prowess and familiarity. Of course, nothing is set in stone at this point. But considering their need for veteran corner help and Griffin's success with the team in the past, it wouldn't be a shock if a deal gets done.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks are gearing up for a new-look team this season, with Sam Darnold signed as a free agent and rookie Jalen Milroe drafted. Though quarterback competitions might not be on the horizon, Milroe is setting his sights high, eager to learn and grow in the Pacific Northwest [4].

It's anyone's guess what this revamped Seahawks team will look like, but one thing's for sure: We can't wait to see how it all pans out!
