Offering Olives: Putin Suggests Direct Talks with Ukraine in Istanbul, bypassing Ceasefire Demands
Discussions proposed by Putin regarding immediate dialogues with Kiev
In a surprising turn of events, Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed a fresh round of talks with Ukraine, set to take place in Istanbul. This upcoming meeting, proposed for May 15th, bypasses the ceasefire ultimatum made by Ukraine and its supporters.
According to Putin, he is ready for "serious, no-strings-attached negotiations" and hopes to initiate them as early as next Thursday in Istanbul. The aim of these negotiations is to "eliminate the deep-rooted issues fueling the conflict." Putin did express his optimism that a new ceasefire might be agreed upon during these talks.
While Ukraine and its Western backers, including U.S. President Donald Trump, had called for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire starting May 12th, Putin did not address this demand in his recent remarks. Instead, he placed the blame of the failed negotiations in 2022 squarely on Ukraine, claiming that it was Kyiv that ended previous talks.
In a sharp rebuke to the demands of Ukraine's allies, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that it was futile to pressure Moscow and expressed a desire to "thoroughly consider" the 30-day ceasefire proposal presented by Kyiv's Western allies.
Going back to 2022, Russia entered Ukraine and currently controls around one-fifth of the country's territory, including the annexed Crimean Peninsula.
