Discussions Initiate between Government and Opposition on Proposed Legislation to Abolish Supplementary Gasoline Tax
Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party-Komeito coalition and seven opposition parties have agreed to scrap the provisional gasoline tax surcharge "as early as possible within this year." The agreement was signed during the ongoing five-day extraordinary session of the Diet.
The bill, jointly submitted by the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, Nippon Ishin no Kai (Japan Innovation Party), the Democratic Party for the People, Sanseito, the Japanese Communist Party, the Conservative Party of Japan, and the Social Democratic Party, calls for lowering the gasoline tax by 25.1 yen per liter by eliminating the surcharge from November 1.
The ruling party has already agreed to abolish the tax surcharge by the end of the year. The current gasoline tax stands at 53.8 percent.
The ruling and opposition parties have committed to holding weekly talks beyond the current Diet session to find common ground on securing alternative revenue sources. These discussions are focused on replacing the funds previously acquired through the provisional gasoline tax surcharge.
During Friday's discussions, LDP tax panel chair Yoichi Miyazawa and CDP policy chief Kazuhiko Shigetoku were among the attendees. The opposition side presented the bill during the discussions, explaining its details to the ruling party.
However, details about what alternative revenue sources are being considered have not yet been publicly disclosed in these initial talks. The focus remains strongly on reaching consensus on how to replace the funds previously acquired through the provisional gasoline tax surcharge.
While active negotiations are underway and a timeline has been set for scrapping the surcharge, the progress on concrete alternative revenue sources is still in the early stages and yet to be finalized publicly.
