Red-Green Coalition Talks Continue Past Easter

- Discussions for alliances to be scheduled post-Easter holiday

Let's dive into the ongoing talks between the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens, happening multiple times a week! They've got six rounds behind them with three more planned before Easter weekend, and if that's not enough, they've agreed on four more sessions post-Easter.

The nitty-gritty of the negotiations has been kept under wraps, but both parties shared a positive outlook after the fifth round last Thursday. They called the talks constructive and trust-building, with agreements on speeding up planning, deregulation, and policies associated with culture, science, and districts. The financial framework for collaboration has also been sketched out.

After the sixth round on Wednesday, no further public announcements are expected.

Interestingly, both parties have already scheduled their respective conferences. The SPD invites its members to a conference on April 26 for a coalition agreement vote. The Greens, on the other hand, have planned a special state members' assembly on April 28. If both approve, SPD's Peter Tschentscher might secure his position as the new mayor at the beginning of May.

It's interesting to note that SPD and Greens have collaborated in Hamburg's town hall for a decade, even after facing losses in the March 2 election. Despite shuffling positions, the SPD remains the strongest party, while the Greens were superseded by the CDU.

For the SPD, collaboration with either the Greens or CDU is still on the table. They've had preliminary discussions with both, however, opted for another term of Red-Green coalition following two rounds of talks.

In recent years, the focus has been on the CDU/CSU and SPD's coalition talks following the 2025 elections. Their agreement involves economic growth, market-oriented energy solutions, and adhering to climate targets like the coal phaseout by 2038. However, data for SPD and Greens discussions after Easter 2023 is lacking, so we've got our fingers crossed for some exciting updates soon!

  1. The Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens, in their ongoing Red-Green Coalition talks, have agreed to hold four more session meetings after Easter, demonstrating their commitment to collaborative governance.
  2. Interestingly, despite the Coalition talks with the Greens, the SPD has also held preliminary discussions with the CDU, keeping their options open for potential collaboration in the future.
  3. Post-Easter, both the SPD and Greens have their respective conferences lined up, the SPD inviting members on April 26 for a coalition agreement vote, and the Greens scheduled for a special state members' assembly on April 28.
