U.S. Approves $800 Million Aid Package for Ukraine
The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee has approved $800 million in aid for Ukraine in 2026, although the specific type of aid has not been specified. This follows President Donald Trump's promise on July 14, 2025, to provide Ukraine with new weapons and equipment.
The aid package is part of a larger budget proposal that also includes funding for the Baltic countries, Bahrain, and Jordan. The European Union is expected to cover the cost of the weapons and equipment that Trump plans to deliver to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
In mid-2025, the U.S. announced a new mechanism in cooperation with NATO countries to send weapons from their stockpiles to Ukraine while the U.S. replenishes those stocks. The U.S. also approved $652 million in Foreign Military Sales (FMS) to Ukraine in July 2025, on top of $310 million approved in May 2025.
The aid aligns with ongoing U.S. commitments to deliver around $30 billion over the next three and a half years, continuing support initiated during the Biden administration. The types of military aid include defensive weapons and other military equipment intended to help Ukraine defend itself against ongoing attacks and ground offensives.
Among the weapons and equipment promised by Trump to Ukraine are Patriot air defense systems. However, Trump did not specify the exact number of systems he plans to deliver. U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, believes that arming Ukraine will push Russia towards negotiations and achieve a lasting ceasefire.
Whitaker hopes the active involvement of the U.S., including arms supplies to NATO allies, will force Russia to return to the negotiating table. The timing of the delivery of the aid to Ukraine in 2026 has not been disclosed. No information was provided about the timeline for the delivery of the weapons and equipment promised by Trump to Ukraine.
It's important to note that the Senate Appropriations Committee's approval does not guarantee the final approval of the aid package. Earlier, U.S. senators proposed $54.6 billion in aid to Ukraine. The cost of the Patriot air defense systems that Trump plans to deliver to the AFU will be covered by the European Union.
The aid to Ukraine since the war began totals approximately $128 billion in committed aid, much of which is military-related, with some parts still in the process of being delivered. This aid also supports U.S. defense manufacturing as weapons are produced both for shipment to Ukraine and to replenish U.S. stocks used during the war effort.
An upcoming wave of military aid packages for Ukraine is expected, as declared by the U.S. ambassador to NATO in early August 2025. Whitaker, in a previous interview with NBC, stated that President Donald Trump is disappointed with the lack of significant progress in resolving the Ukrainian conflict.
