Fatal Shootings Spark Debate: Is It Time for Police to Rely More on Tasers?
Discussion reignites on Taser implementation following deadly shootings - Discussion resurfaces over the appropriateness of Taser usage following fatal gunshot incidents
The latest fatal police shooting incident in Munich has reignited the discussion about the use of tasers by the Bavarian police. Advocates, such as the German Police Union, advocate for the wider use of electric shock devices, like tasers, even among two-officer patrol units. But, Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann of the CSU prefers their use only in specialized, four-person teams with appropriate protective gear.
Currently, there are 230 tasers in Bavaria, according to Herrmann, although these devices are not commonly used among standard patrol units. A working group within the ministry has prepared an evaluation report on taser effectiveness, which is currently under review.
Herrmann highlights the limitations of tasers, stating that they may not work effectively in highly tense or life-threatening situations, particularly if the perpetrator is wearing clothing that the electrodes can't penetrate or if the weapon isn't dropped following the shock. He also emphasizes the need for specialized protective gear to disarm the suspect.
The Green Party's Interior expert in the Bavarian state parliament, Florian Siekmann, cautions against overreliance on tasers. These devices can be ineffective in certain scenarios (e.g., when the target person is wearing thick winter clothing) and may overwhelm patrol officers who undergo additional training to use them.
The German Police Union (DPolG) supports equipping every patrol car with a taser, allowing one officer to use it if needed, while the other remains ready with the firearm, just in case. они считают, что в критических ситуациях, где происходит контакт с оружием, тазера могут заменить использование огнестрельного оружия и сократить число жертв.
As for the Munich shooting investigation, no new details have been released. The Bavarian State Criminal Police are conducting routine inquiries when shots are fired from service weapons. The exact number of shots, the weapons involved, and the number that struck the attacker remain unknown. The suspect, a woman, had recently been released from police custody before attacking a 56-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman at the Theresienwiese, an annual autumn venue for the Oktoberfest, resulting in minor injuries for both victims.

The Commission, in light of the Munich shooting incident, has been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, as debate continues on de-escalation tools such as tasers in police response strategies. Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann of the CSU, while discussing the use of tasers in Bavaria, highlights the limitations of these devices and emphasizes the need for specialized protective gear.
