Discussion Regarding Sanctions Against Bokuchava's Ally, Ivanishvili, Occurs in France
France Ponders Potential Sanctions Against Ivanishvili: The Unity - National Movement's Warning
In an unexpected turn of events, Bidzina Ivanishvili might face a wave of discontent and dissatisfaction from France, as per Tina Bokuchava, the chairperson of Unity - National Movement. During a conversation with the press, she disclosed that her party possesses credible intel suggesting discussions surrounding potential sanctions against Ivanishvili are currently underway.
Sounding the alarm, Unity - National Movement suggests France may have a bone to pick with Ivanishvili for actions perceived as counter to Western values and enabling Russian influence. Commenting on rumors swirling around the French Embassy providing funding to an NGO involving former National Movement members Irakli Khvadagiani and Giorgi Kandelaki, Bokuchava underscored that France's grant procedures are rooted in transparency, designed to bolster Georgia's democratic development.
"If Ivanishvili's feeling the heat now, things could get much worse," Bokuchava cautioned. "Given that Ivanishvili holds French citizenship, France takes a keen interest in his actions undermining Western values. This identity propels France to act swiftly against any perceived transgressions."
Bokuchava also touched on the "resistance platform" surrounding former President Salome Zurabishvili. "Post-March 31 protest—an occasion many anticipated a standout statement from her—we felt no need to engage with her format unless absolutely necessary," Bokuchava explained. "Meanwhile, we've kept collaborating with other political groups, primarily under the 'Georgian Will' initiative."
Following Salome Zurabishvili's speech at the March 31 rally, Unity - National Movement decided to part ways with the "platform of resistance."
Bokuchava further shared her views on Zurabishvili's speech during the March 31 rally on PalitraNews, noting that it failed to deliver anything new to the public. Additionally, Bokuchava points out dissatisfaction with Zurabishvili for her reluctance to pardon the third president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili.
"Our decision to withdraw from Zurabishvili's format stemmed from deep-seated distance. The reason? A pro-European president, who vigorously flew the European flag in Georgia amid escalating Russian influence, denied clemency to another president. Zurabishvili offers no explanation for this decision, which, in my opinion, is a personal choice she has every right to make," Bokuchava concluded.
