Intensified Drone Attacks on Belgorod Region Cause Civilian Injuries and Infrastructure Damage
The Belgorod region in Russia has been under repeated drone attacks, with the latest incidents causing civilian injuries and infrastructure damage. On August 14, the center of Belgorod was subjected to a massive drone attack, with at least four strikes on the regional government building on Sobornaya Square.
Explosions and gunfire were heard over the city in the morning, and the military promptly blocked off a section of Prospekt Slavy from Prospekt Bogdan Khmelnitsky to Popova Street in response to the attack. Three people were injured in the city: one man sustained multiple shrapnel wounds, a woman suffered a burn on her forearm, and another local resident suffered barotrauma and a shrapnel wound to his leg.
The top floor of the Belgorod Region government building, including the governor's office, was severely damaged, but no officials were injured. A light vehicle was hit and caught fire during the attack. The day before, on August 13, 13 people were injured in Belgorod, Belgorod District, Valuyki, and Graivoron districts due to strikes on residential buildings and vehicles.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine have launched massive drone attacks on the Belgorod Region in the past two days. The governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, compared the situation to the massive shelling of Belgorod by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in March 2024 during the Russian presidential elections.
To mitigate the risk, the operational headquarters of the Belgorod region has decided to switch state agencies and affiliated institutions to remote work format for the rest of the week, and to close shopping centers, parks, and summer terraces in Belgorod and the Belgorod region. Residents will be notified of drone attack dangers through the new messenger MAX and radio channels.
Ukrainian forces have successfully targeted Russian logistical infrastructure in Belgorod using First-Person View (FPV) drones to destroy at least two bridges near the border. The region has an effective tiered protection system against drone attacks, and authorities are preparing for changes in the enemy's strategy.
Defensive measures taken by Russian authorities include intensified air defense operations. Over eight southwestern Russian regions, including Belgorod, have reportedly shot down 54 Ukrainian drones. Temporary flight restrictions have been put in place at several regional airports to protect civilian air traffic amid ongoing drone threats.
The latest updates indicate that drone attacks on the Belgorod region have intensified, involving multiple explosions and causing both infrastructure damage and civilian injuries. On August 24, residents of Stary Oskol reported at least five explosions caused by flying "Lyutyi" type drones, which shook houses and triggered car alarms. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have destroyed 57 Ukrainian drones over Russian regions recently, including attacks on an oil depot, a military airfield, and a fuel storage plant in the broader area.
