Israeli government deliberates on additional actions in the afternoon with regards to the Gaza Strip - Discussion by Israeli Security Council on potential escalation in Gaza

The Israeli Security Cabinet has taken a significant step in its ongoing conflict with Hamas, deciding to expand its military operation in the Gaza Strip and potentially take control of Gaza City, a major population center[1]. This decision, according to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, could pose a dangerous escalation for the two million civilians in Gaza and the Israeli hostages still being held captive[1].

The meeting of the Security Cabinet, which took place in the afternoon, was called to discuss further actions in the Gaza Strip[2]. The plan presented to the Cabinet aims to dismantle the Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas and pressure it into releasing the 49 hostages it has held for nearly two years[3].

However, disagreements between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli military chief, Eyal Zamir, have arisen. Zamir argues that an expanded military operation could endanger the lives of the hostages still held by Hamas[4].

On Wednesday, the Israeli military published an evacuation notice for parts of the northern city of Gaza and the southern city of Khan Yunis[5]. The cities of Gaza and Khan Yunis are located in the Gaza Strip.
