Discussion between Zelensky and US special envoy Kellogg on air defense systems yielded progress

In a significant move to bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities, the United States and Germany have agreed to deliver Patriot air defense missile systems to Ukraine. The announcement comes as Russia continues to escalate its attacks on Ukraine's infrastructure and military logistics, particularly with long-range missiles and drones.

The decision was made during a productive meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US special envoy Keith Kellogg in Kyiv. The discussions also included plans for joint production and acquiring defensive weapons in cooperation with Europe.

Germany is set to finalize a deal with the U.S. on July 14, 2025, to deliver two Patriot systems to Ukraine. This marks a significant expansion of Germany’s role in supplying advanced air defense capabilities to Ukrainian forces.

In addition to Germany's contribution, the United States plans to send more Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine using funds provided by the European Union. President Donald Trump confirmed this during a briefing, emphasizing the urgency of these systems for Ukraine’s defense. Other European countries such as Norway and the Netherlands are also involved in financing or delivering Patriot batteries and launchers to Ukraine.

The potential inclusion of long-range missiles capable of striking deep into Russian territory, including Moscow, marks a shift towards supplying offensive weapons to Ukraine for the first time under the current administration. This move responds to recent intelligence about a planned new Russian offensive to reclaim occupied Ukrainian regions within 60 days.

However, as of July 2025, no new sanctions against Russia have been detailed in the recent information available. The focus in recent discussions remains on enhancing Ukraine’s military defense capabilities through air defense support and possibly new offensive weaponry.

US President Donald Trump has been trying to end the Ukraine conflict since his return to the White House in January. Trump has expressed disappointment with Russia's lack of willingness to agree to a ceasefire and has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of "spreading a lot of nonsense." Trump is scheduled to meet NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in Washington to discuss the ongoing conflict.

Trump announced he would make a "major statement" about Russia on Monday, hinting at further developments in the ongoing saga. The delivery of the Patriot missile systems and potential inclusion of long-range missiles could mark a turning point in the conflict, providing Ukraine with the means to defend itself more effectively against Russian aggression.

  1. Amidst the ongoing political discussions regarding Ukraine's defense, the EU Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, given the increased use of such systems in the region.
  2. As the tensions in war-and-conflicts zones, including Ukraine, continue to dominate general news, the delivery of advanced air defense missile systems like Patriots is being perceived as a significant step in politics, aimed at safeguarding countries from external threats.
