Discussion between Russian and American foreign ministers regarding the arrangements for a Putin-Trump summit

The highly anticipated meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump took place this week in the U.S. state of Alaska, marking a significant diplomatic event. Despite intense discussions lasting around three hours, the summit concluded without a ceasefire deal on Ukraine.

The leaders' meeting was preceded by a telephone conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, focusing on preparations for the much-anticipated encounter.

The absence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders at the summit has raised concerns among European countries about being sidelined in negotiations affecting their continent. Trump indicated that it was up to Zelensky “to get it done” and suggested that European states “have to get involved a little bit,” signalling a push for Europe to take a more active role without their actual presence at the meeting.

Trump has promised to speak with European leaders and Zelensky after meeting with Putin. However, his statement that he would "try to recover something" of Ukrainian territory has caused apprehension among European leaders.

Despite the lack of a ceasefire agreement, Zelensky has proposed discussions for a trilateral meeting, presumably involving the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine. However, concrete next steps remain unclear. The EU has reclaimed Ukraine's role in negotiations and warned Russia in a message without Hungary's involvement.

The summit has been criticized by European leaders due to the absence of Zelensky. Trump, however, maintained that both he and Putin will be "in the same room" to resolve the Ukrainian conflict.

Following the summit, there are ongoing complexities and unresolved tensions in diplomatic efforts surrounding Ukraine, involving the U.S., Russia, Europe, and Ukraine itself. The developments underscore the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation in resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
