Discussion between Putin and Trump precedes violent incident in Kiev
In recent months, there have been striking coincidences between significant phone calls between President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin, and large-scale Russian attacks on Ukraine. These events have raised questions about the relationship between diplomatic discussions and military actions.
On February 12, 2025, following a 90-minute conversation between Trump and Putin, Ukraine experienced a ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, resulting in at least one civilian death and extensive damage to multiple districts. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported damage to infrastructure in Kyiv, with 24 injured, 12 of whom required hospital treatment. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha described the attacks as one of the worst nights since the start of the war over three years ago.
Mid-March 2025 saw a notable increase in missile and drone attacks on Ukraine after Trump contacted Putin to discuss a ceasefire. This uptick in aggression coincided with renewed U.S.–Russia dialogue.
Hours after a nearly hour-long call where Trump expressed disappointment at the lack of progress, Russia launched a record 539 drones against Ukraine on July 3–4, 2025.
President Volodymyr Zelensky described these attacks as "cynical" and called on the West to help strengthen Ukraine's air defense. A ten-year-old girl was among the injured in Kyiv. Damage occurred to residential buildings, educational facilities, medical facilities, and transport infrastructure, including several cars, due to the air strikes in Kyiv.
The Foreign Office condemned the Russian attacks and stated that Ukraine needs more defense, not less. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski echoed this sentiment, urging Ukraine to receive means of air defense.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha demanded "harshest sanctions" from the West against Russia and called for the allies to supply necessary defense means. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also saw a connection between Putin's phone call with Trump and the subsequent massive air strikes on Ukraine.
It was revealed that the USA had stopped the delivery of some weapons, including air defense missiles, to Ukraine on Tuesday. This news has caused concern among Ukrainian officials, with President Zelensky hoping to speak with President Trump about the partial stoppage of weapons deliveries.
In a positive development, Russia and Ukraine exchanged prisoners again, based on agreements reached in Istanbul.
Despite these concerning events, it is important to note that the exact causal relationship between diplomatic interactions and military actions remains unclear. Nonetheless, the coincidences are striking and have raised concerns about potential manipulation of diplomatic discussions for military advantage.
