Discussion between Putin and Trump centering on Ukraine's issues: Agenda points to explore

In a high-stakes diplomatic encounter, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump met in Alaska on August 15, 2025, with the primary objective of negotiating an immediate ceasefire to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. The talks, which took place at a U.S. military base, were the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders since the full-scale Russian invasion began in February 2022.

The meeting, lasting nearly three hours, was marked as a significant diplomatic engagement, with both leaders accompanied by senior officials. Trump's team included Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, while Putin was joined by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and other advisers.

The discussions focused on halting Russia's military assault in Ukraine, with the U.S. aiming to negotiate a halt to the conflict. However, the meeting concluded without any ceasefire agreement or concrete deal. Putin refused to agree to a pause in the conflict, and Russian forces reportedly continued attacks on Ukraine during the summit.

Despite the lack of a breakthrough, both leaders left open the possibility of further meetings, including a potential future summit in Moscow. Trump had expressed hope that the Alaska talks would pave the way for a second meeting involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, aiming for an inclusive negotiation process.

However, the biggest point of contention in the negotiations remains military action. Putin has demanded that certain territories captured by Russian troops during the Ukraine war be permanently transferred to Russia, a demand that has been met with resistance from Ukraine and the U.S.

As the talks continue, the issue of Ukraine's potential NATO membership looms large. Ukraine believes that membership would reduce the likelihood of another Russian attack, while Putin aims to prevent any possible NATO military presence on Ukrainian territory.

The meeting took place in Alaska, a state in the northwest of the United States, a location described as "logical" by Yuri Ushakov, Kremlin foreign policy adviser. The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, seeks to prevent NATO from expanding further eastward.

Trump, who had previously announced he would end the war within the first 24 hours of his term, is now about 200 days past his own deadline. He has also expressed a desire to arrange a three-way meeting with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but neither leader has agreed to this yet.

Meanwhile, Russian troops currently occupy a large part of the four eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia, in addition to other areas in Ukraine and the annexed Crimean Peninsula. Kyiv has demanded full sovereignty for Ukraine and wants the borders to return to their pre-war state.

In a surprising turn of events, Trump's political ally, Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu, recently nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. As the negotiations continue, the international community watches with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

  1. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, a subject of extensive general news and politics, remains a significant point of contention in the discussions between the governments of Russia and the United States, with both leaders striving to reach a ceasefire agreement but facing obstacles such as territorial demands and potential NATO membership.
  2. Amidst the ongoing war-and-conflicts in Ukraine, the international community, including Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu, has recognized the diplomatic efforts of US President Donald Trump, nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize, as the talks continue in hopes of achieving a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
